Shavuot Wonder Pot סיר פלא Recipe – Cheesecake

Shavuot-Sinai

Wonder Pot (Hebrew: סיר פלא‎, seer peh-leh) is an Israeli invention for baking on top of a gas stove rather than in an oven. It consists of three parts: an aluminum pot shaped like a Bundt pan except smooth-sided rather than fluted, a hooded cover perforated with venting holes, and a thick, round, slightly domed metal disc with a center hole that is placed between the pot and the flame. A Wonder Pot can be used to bake cakes, casseroles, rice, potatoes, apples, and even meat and chicken.

Wonder Pot (Hebrewסיר פלאsír péleHebrew pronunciation: [siʁ ˈpele]) is an Israeli invention for baking on top of a gas stove rather than in an oven. It consists of three parts: an aluminium pot shaped like a Bundt pan except smooth-sided rather than fluted, a hooded cover perforated with venting holes, and a thick, round, slightly domed metal disc with a center hole that is placed between the pot and the flame.

A Wonder Pot can be used to bake cakes, casseroles, rice, potatoes, apples, meat, and chicken.[1][2]

History

Wonder Pot - A Wonder Pot (right) on the stove

Wonder Pot – A Wonder Pot (right) on the stove

The Wonder Pot gained popularity during Israel’s era of national austerity in the 1950s, when most citizens did not own an oven. The concept was based on models from Germany and Eastern Europe, and was first manufactured by the Palalum company (the company name was a contraction of the words pele (wonder) and aluminium). Later the Wonder Pot was manufactured by other companies in the Haredi sector, including the Matlum company, which continues to produce the item today.[1]

The Wonder Pot retained its popularity through the 1970s, especially among new immigrants who did not have ovens. During its heyday, the Wonder Pot spawned its own bestselling cookbook. The introduction of the microwave oven and a national desire to dissociate with the austerity mentality put an end to its widespread use.[3] However, the Wonder Pot is still used by Israeli Haredi families for baking kugels, and it is also popular in this sector on the holiday of Passover for those who do not have a kosher-for-Passover oven.[1][4]

Today the Wonder Pot is considered a nostalgic Israeli kitchen item. It is still sold in traditional housewares stores, via marketing outlets, and in Haredi communities such as Bnei Brak[1] and Jerusalem. In the late 2000s decade, a housewares store calling itself Seer Peh-leh (“Wonder Pot”) opened in the Talpiot neighborhood of Jerusalem.[5]

How it works

Place The Wonder Pot, סיר פלא, on top of the flame heat diffuser so that the bottom grove of the pot is on the rim of the flame heat diffuser.

Place The Wonder Pot, סיר פלא, on top of the flame heat diffuser so that the bottom grove of the pot is on the rim of the flame heat diffuser.

The Wonder Pot is effective at baking on top of the stove for three reasons: its aluminum material, its hole, and the metal disc separating it from the flame. The aluminium material allows heat to spread uniformly. The center hole of the pot focuses the flame and creates heat dispersion around the inside of the cake. The metal disc lifts the pot off the fire, reducing and focusing the flame. Baking in the Wonder Pot without the metal disc will produce a cake that is dry on the bottom and thick and wobbly in the center. The metal disc is sold in different thicknesses and diameters to accommodate different baking times and larger flames. The lid of the Wonder Pot is perforated with small holes to release steam. Baking time in a Wonder Pot varies from 40 to 50 minutes.[1]

The Wonder Pot produces high and airy cakes. In addition to baking, the Wonder Pot is an effective medium for cooking vegetables, legumes, and rice in layers. It can also be used to cook kugels, casseroles, pasta dishes, meat, and chicken.[1]

Israeli ice cream lovers, rejoice!

Ben & Jerry’s Israel has announced it will offer a brand-new flavor – in a limited edition – for the upcoming Lag B’Omer holiday.

The new flavor, “S’mores” will reprise the long-beloved sweet, created annually by countless children at summer campfires, using sweet crackers, chocolate bars and gooey, roasted marshmallows.

The name “s’mores” is an abbreviation of the phrase “some more.”

The Ben & Jerry’s version – only in Israel and only for the Lag B’Omer holiday, will feature ice cream that combines marshmallow with cookie crumbs, chocolate cookie crumbs and pieces of fudge.

The new flavor will be available in all the Israeli food chains, convenience stores and supermarkets where Ben & Jerry’s is sold.

Ben & Jerry's new Milk and Honey

Ben & Jerry’s new Milk and Honey

Ben & Jerry’s Israel has launched an ice cream that it is billing as “the most Israeli flavour there is” – milk and honey.

In a case of “it does what it says on the tub”, the ice cream combines milk, cream and honey, and it also contains chocolate fudge pieces shaped like Stars of David.

All of the ingredients are sourced from produce grown in collaboration with farmers, local businesses, and social organisations from the south of Israel and the Gaza envelope.

Unveiling the new flavour, the business said: “In the wake of the events of October 7, as a company based in the south that employs hundreds of workers from the region, we at Ben & Jerry’s Israel felt a responsibility to play an active role in the region’s recovery process.

“The idea for Milk and Honey – an Israeli ice cream that symbolises positive action and regional reconstruction – was born out of a sense of resilience and a desire for renewal.”

It continued: “Hundreds of employees at our factory in Be’er Tuvia took part in the development and production, driven by a desire to help rebuild the community, to provide strength and sweetness even in difficult times, and by a shared belief in hope and in our ability to build a better future together.”

The brand has high hopes for Milk and Honey beyond satisfying the cravings of sweet-toothed Israelis: “Our aspiration is that, beyond being a sweet and exceptionally delicious ice cream, Milk and Honey will also serve as a symbol of hope, recovery, and positive action for the community,” it said.

Royalties from sales will be donated to support recovery initiatives and community and educational projects in the south and the Gaza envelope, in partnership with the Ayalim Association, a non-profit organisation helping to build student communities across the Negev and Galilee.

Ben and Jerry’s Israel is run as an entirely separate entity from the global Ben & Jerry’s brand and the latter’s parent company, consumer goods giant Unilever.

The division stems from a major corporate dispute that arose in 2021 when Ben & Jerry’s global board announced its intention to halt sales “in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT)” – meaning the West Bank, (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza strip – because selling there was “inconsistent” with the brand’s values. It noted at the time that the decision reflected the concerns of its “fans and trusted partners”.

Ben & Jerry’s co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield – both of whom are Jewish – wrote in an opinion piece for The New York Times: “The company’s stated decision to more fully align its operations with its values is not a rejection of Israel. It is a rejection of Israeli policy, which perpetuates an illegal occupation that is a barrier to peace and violates the basic human rights of the Palestinian people who live under the occupation. As Jewish supporters of the State of Israel, we fundamentally reject the notion that it is antisemitic to question the policies of the State of Israel.”

They added: “We believe this act can and should be seen as advancing the concepts of justice and human rights, core tenets of Judaism.”

The following year, however, Unilever sold its Ben & Jerry’s ice cream business in Israel and the West Bank to its long-term local licensee.

“The new arrangement means Ben & Jerry’s will be sold under its Hebrew and Arabic names throughout Israel and the West Bank under the full ownership of its current licensee,” Unilever said at the time.

Last September, Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry’s after nearly 50 years.

American Heart Association Issues New Coffee Guidelines

Higher amounts of caffeine may cause problems such as high blood pressure, the organization said.

Zachary Stieber
Senior Reporter
7/20/2026|Updated: 7/21/2026
https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/american-heart-association-issues-new-coffee-guidelines-6064534

Most adults can safely drink five cups of coffee a day, according to the American Heart Association.

The organization said in a July 20 statement that synthesizes research on caffeine that the latest studies indicate that for most adults, consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day—or up to five 8-ounce cups of coffee—without added sugar and milk is not only safe, but appears to result in a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Higher levels of caffeine, such as those found in energy drinks, may harm the heart and blood vessels, the association said.

Most of the studies underpinning the guidance come from observational research, although there are a growing number of randomized, controlled trials that examined the relationship between caffeine and various health problems, including a trial that found no impact on glucose levels.

The data suggest that moderate consumption of caffeine lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, among other problems, but that coffee consumption does increase premature ventricular contractions, or extra heartbeats, the group said. It indicates high doses of caffeine can lead to significant increases in blood pressure, particularly in people who already had high blood pressure. And it shows that consuming unfiltered coffee, which contains the lipid cafestol, raised serum cholesterol.

“Brewing method influences lipids,” Dr. Abdulla Damluji, an interventional cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic who was not involved with the new guidance, wrote on X. “Advise patients concerned about low density lipoprotein cholesterol to prefer paper filtered or instant coffee over French press, Greek or Turkish, or boiled coffee, because cafestol in unfiltered coffee raises cholesterol.”

Scientists behind the statement said there is a need for more data and noted that reactions to caffeine can vary among people.

“The data suggests that up to about three to five cups may have benefit and almost certainly is not harmful, but that doesn’t mean that consuming three to five drinks is better than having one drink per day,” Dr. Gregory Marcus, chair of the volunteer group that wrote the guidance, said in a video statement.

“So generally, the evidence suggests that people should listen to their bodies if consuming one cup of caffeinated coffee is enough and consuming two is uncomfortable. Individuals should not increase how much caffeine they’re consuming for health reasons.”

Researchers should prioritize studying caffeine in isolation from other ingredients in caffeinated beverages and examine whether introducing coffee to people who do not currently drink it yields positive health outcomes, the group said.

Most of the authors did not list any possible conflicts of interest. One listed being an unpaid consultant for the Institute for the Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences and working with manufacturers such as Keurig, and another said he consults for Boston Scientific Corp, which makes pacemakers and other devices for people with heart issues.

The heart association in 2025 had advised children to avoid caffeine, and had in the past said that adults could derive benefits from coffee but that drinking two or more cups a day could double the risk of heart death in people suffering from severe hypertension.

The meaning of Shavuot

itamarbengvir-tweet-21May2026-The meaning of Shavuot
Shavuot is a moment that reminds us who we truly are.

With a people that knows how to fight with bravery, and is capable of standing strong against its enemies, and to stop apologizing and turning the other cheek. And also to pause for a moment to learn, to connect, and to pass on our values to the next generation.

When I sit to study with my children, I understand what we’re truly fighting for. Not just for the country, but for our identity, for our tradition, and for the future of the Jewish people.

A joyous Chag Matan Torah to every house of Israel.
Together, with the help of G-d, we will continue to triumph. 🇮🇱
